data ports while traveling?

I’m going traveling next month and I do have a wireless card on my laptop and know how to look for hotspots, but if I am in a hotel that says it has data ports, what will I need to connect to the internet while in my hotel? Please be real specific, I’m ok at this stuff, but not real familiar. So please expalin what it is if I need a “513″ cord or something like that.
Thanks!
Ps. I looked at another question like mine and it said that you need a dialup isp…WTF is that? (I know what dial up is, just how do you do that when you are used to having your own DSL at home?)

  1. if they have data ports you will need a RJ-45 cable or another name for it is a cat 5 cable you can even get the retractable for easy storage. check Walmart just about every store has them now days

  2. If you have a network card all you need is a CAT5 LAN cable. If not you also need a pcmcia network card. Some isps offer a dialup alternative for roaming, but this uses a phone line, from hotels this can be very expensive.
