How can I break up someone’s dialup connection on purpose?

I want to know how I can INTENTIONALLY break up someone's dial-up connection from my house. My grandmother sometimes leaves her internet on and I can't call to check up on her. Can someone tell me how I can do this if possible?

Go into the IE settings and you can have it shut off after a period of inactivity.

You can't. In any event this would be a seriously illegal act, tampering with telecommunications.

Have your grandmother get call waiting and hook it up to her computer so when a call comes through it will show up on her PC and disconnect her or pay for your grandmother to get DSL

You can't, but you could both download Skype, then you can call from your computer to hers! It will ring while she is online, with web cams you can see her as well as talk to her!

The Dial-up should disconnect if nothing has gone through for a given a mount of time, but that could be clear up to an hour. You might could download a program that if nothing is using the line for 5mins it disconnects.

A quick search on the internet came up with this program

You might see if there is something else

Why not speak with her about changing her connectivity practices or better yet, get her a cell phone if you really need to check on her. Interfering with her communication utilities may also violate some laws so you'll want to check a bit more into that before really attempting any disruption.

You used to be able to get an operator on the phone and have her check to see if the line was truly in use. But, with the advent of internet, it would be impossible to tell whether your grandmother is using the internet, or just wandered off to watch her favorite soap and forgot to log off. If you are calling long distance, you might be able to get it to work once, but not as a regular thing. I wish I had a better answer than this, and maybe some of our other readers will have!

Good luck, and thanks for caring about grandmother. I am a great-grandmother and would be thrilled if one of mine called to check on me! Too bad, I have cable.

In the modem settings, there's a check box to disable call waiting for dial up connections. Assuming she has call waiting, uncheck that box. Calling repeatedly with call waiting will result in an unstable connection and eventually knock her offline, at which point the phone will ring on your next attempt.
