How can I cleanup my computer to run more efficiently? Something is using a lot of memory.?

The computer has a 144GB capacity, 76.35GB free space (52%). I cannot complete a disk cleanup. I tried doing a defrag at 2A this morning and at 8A it was only at 32% complete. Where do I start and how do I find out what is using the memory? I use a DSL line, but the computer is performing as if it were a dialup. Also, my hobby is photography…a lot of pixs. This is a Dell..so forget Customer Service.

  1. I’d suggest some basic windows xp housekeeping:

    a links is below:
also try a program called tune up utilities

  2. as with all computer problems, start by running your anti virus/spyware programs and get that out of the way. open your taskmanager (ctrl alt & del) and see what processes are running on your computer, you maybe notice something using all your system resources.

Here is my todo list for memory cleanup:

    - set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
    - review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
    - from Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history.
    - run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
    - periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — they type ipconfig renew
    (that’s ipconfig space renew).
These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.
It will also help if you download two free programs: Ad-aware and Spybot.

  5. Click Start>Run and type msconfig. Take the box out of Load Startup Items. This will take out most of the processes running in the background. NOTE…. This may also remove some of your drivers including your sound driver. If this does happen, Click the startup tab at the top of msconfig and take them out manually, leaving only the ones you know you need. This can be tricky though, so be sure that you DO NOT need what you are removing from startup.

Use a software called ‘CCleaner’ to clean up temporary files in your hard drive.

you can download it at http://www.ccleaner.com. The latest version is 1.40.0 and it’s absolutely free.

    Hoping this will help…

  7. First I would store all my pics to a seperate storage drive (i use a 250GB USB storage drive). Then if your computer is whiped out by a virus, your photography is not lost. Also it is easy to take with you as well.

Then I would do an anti-virus/spyware check, then go to add/remove programs (delete everything you don’t use/need)always have a backup disk just incase you need something in the future. Restart to pc and then see if that helps. It should make a difference. You should also delete all cookies, and internet temp files often as well. Also look under cntl+alt+del (windows task manager) and see what processes are running (you could find things running that u don’t need running). You can easily find out what things are by a yahoo/google search. Also if any other users are logged on that will slow it down as well.

  8. 1. first try to download this following programs…spybot, spyblaster and adware then run it in full scan mode…

    2. second avoid putting a lot of shortcut icon on your desktop and toolbar it really takes a lot of memory weather you have a ton of free space i dont know whats the mystery behind that…

    3. third if the first two steps does not help this is the best solution for sure in my experience re-format your computer…be sure before doing this step put all your important files and documents in a temporary storage device so you can retrieve them all later after your done reformatting your computer…

suggestion for the pics… my dad is a photographer to especially when it is all high quality pics try not to store them all in your computer just pick the best ones that you like and the rest store it on a external hard drive…this way you save memory plus if something happens with your computer you have a backup…

clear all your data. move it to a flash disk temporarily. if you are using norton or mcafee remove them and you will notice a whole lot of difference. And then defrag and clean it up it will run great.

My problem was much more worse than yours I did it my computer then worked like a super computer i still use a flash disk to access the data i moved i cant take any other risks.
