How can I get high speed Internet in the sticks?

My vacation home is in the country. No cable, no DSL (phone Co. won’t consider it), only dialup. Some enterpreneurs in neighboring counties have set up wireless broadcast towers that enable folks to use for a fee. How can I identify any such providers in my area?

Try satellite cable. The satellite company just has to drive out to install a dish, or I believe some companies will ship them to you with directions, and you can screw it into a roof and run the wire yourself. I believe Direct TV is the company we use in N. California.

  2. If you’re looking for a local wireless provider, ask around at the local computer stores… or radio shack, or any store that’s tech friendly. If there are any high speed terrestrial wireless providers, they’ll know. Also ask your cell phone provider; I use Alltel, and they’ve recently dropped the price of their “high speed” access to $25/month. (It’s not cable modem speeds, but it’s a lot faster than dialup.) Satellite may be the only option, though, but ask around before giving up.
