How can I make my dialup modem under linux not disconnect itself when under a heavy load, such as downloading?

Whenever I try to do something like downloading any decent-sized file(that would take over 2 minutes or so), my modem just disconnects. I think our phone lines are messed up in the first place(lightning zapped our house), but do I really have to be unable to download anything without babysitting it and resetting the connection every 2 minutes? Our windows computer seems to handle loads “okay” with the same line, but neither my laptop with a PCMCIA modem nor my desktop with a winmodem can seem to handle the stress.

Thanks!

  1. if you are not using the internet net while the file is downloading your ISP (Internet Service Provider) is automaticly disconnecting you cause of inactivity… doesn’t think downloading a file is a acitve connection so just find a webpage that resets itself every minute or so

    BTDT ;)
