set the baud rate of you fax machine to 9600, then pretend you use an overseas line….you know…dial the long number and stuff…then the fax will work with broadband!

If you still have a fax/modem card on your PC, you can plug it into your landline, if you still have one, or into your telephone adaptor for your IP phone provider (e.g., Vonage). Roger’s answer would then apply for adjusting your settings to be able to make a good connection using IP telephony.
If you don’t have a fax modem card, then, by your subject line, you could try out one of those fax services like eFax or MyFax, which allows you to send and receive a fax via email. Receiving a fax is typically free, but sending one requires a monthly subscription.
If you send faxes infrequently, you might as well hoof it over to Kinkos and use their equipment.
