Your modem is already set to connect at the hightest amount of bandwidth the modem can handle (usually 56k, maybe a little more). If it makes a bad connection, it will connect at a slower speed. It also depends on the connection speed of the modem you are connecting to. Personally, I'd recommend upgrading to DSL or Cable modem since they are going to be many times faster than any dial up modem.
