Once upon a time (1994ish) I used to do tech support for AOL – dialup was the only way back then.
I had spent a great deal of time working with modem manufacturers to learn how they initialization string in a modem works.
This is your only option to tweak a dialup account.
What you can do varies depending on your chipset in your modem – (there are ways of finding this out in windows)
I used to give people that called into support this horrible anology so they could understand the work involved in setting up an initialization string:
“It’s like getting a car and trying to find out if it gets better gas mileage with texaco, exxon, or chevron, etc…”
The difference is there are a lot more options for an initialization string.
The dilemna you’re going to have is that it’s not just your modem that matters but the bank of modems offered by your ISP. So the initialziation string is used to tell your modem how to talk to their modems. This creates a lot of trial and error, when I did tech support I had a 40 page manual that I created of initialization strings for a variety of manufacturers – I still spent about 10-15 minutes on these calls.
You already have a good connection with your dialup and I wouldn’t suggest trying to tweak it.
I don’t know your situation but, dialup’s run anywehere from $5/month – $25/month (and more – i’ve heard rumors some companies are going to start charging DSL prices to encourage people to switch to broadband)
the lower end dialup accounts won’t get anywhere near as good of a connection that you have (typically)
So if you’re already putting out $20/month – you might want to look at the $40/month for DSL and enjoy a fast connection.
If your situations is such that you can’t get DSL or don’t want to spend the $$$ you can email me and I’ll see what I can find out for you. No guarantees. Like I’ve said – you already have a great connection for dialup.
