I can connect to my linksys router but not browse the web?

Hi.. I tried setting up my new linksys router and it seemed that all went well until I tried to surf the web. I can connect with a good connection but I’m not able to surf the web. The activity light by my pc’s system clock flashes frequently when I’m trying (and sometimes when I’m doing nothing) but my browsers (mozilla and IE 6) say they can’t locate the page. I’ve tried a bunch of sites. This is a wireless router and I’m connecting with a windows xp sp2 system. I can use the net fine with dialup. Any ideas?

Thanks!

  1. How did you configured the laptop and wireless device through ip or through dhcp,

You have to give the gateway and dns in your wireless device
Then ping to the gate way from the laptop if it ping then ping the dns.

  2. Check and see if you connect to the internet by bypssing the Linksys Router. If so then the most likely problem is with a setting on the router. If you cannot connect to the internet your internet connection is probably down. Unplug power from your modem and router. Plug your modem in first wait for the DSL light to go solid. Then plug in the Linksys. Also do not logon to the Linksys using IE use Firefox. IE makes the router crash.

The connection that you have indicates that you are connected to the router. I am assuming that you are getting some sort of indication that you are indeed connnected to the router.

As an additional step, I would suggest verifying that you have an IP address. Click the start button->run. Type cmd and Enter. This will open a command window. Type IPCONFIG and press Enter. If you are connected, you should have an IP address such as 192.168.xxx.xxx If the IP address is 169.xxx, then the computer is not connected to the router.

Connection by the router to your ISP / internet is a seperate process and will vary depending on the service provider. If you have a Cable Modem or Fiber Optic service, the connection is direct. If using DSL, the connection generally requires a username and password to be entered prior to connecting.

Depending on your model, you should be able to log in to the router and see what the IP address of the router is. If you are not getting a proper IP address, then it is not connecting to the ISP. Go through the setup process again and be sure that everything is properly configured.

If things still don’t work, then try connecting directly from the modem (cable/DSL, etc.) to your computer. Are you able to connect? If not, contact your ISP’s technical support department.

I apologize for not being able to provide more specific, step by step solutions to your problems, however, there are too many steps in which the failures could occur. Walk your way through the proces, verifying that the modem works, that the router communicates with the modem, etc. and you’ll find the broken link.

  4. you cant use a router with dialup.it wont work!
if you have DSL then you need to set your router for DHCP Internet and to obtain the IP address automatically!
