i’m assuming you mean dsl and not dial-up, you generally need to go to your dsl modem’s page, which, usually is this address:
192.168.1.1
copy and paste that to your internet explorer address bar
you may be asked for a password and user name, generally the user name is: admin
password: password
tho you may want to check your dsl modem’s documents on that. those are the most commonly used ones.
after you successfully log into your dsl modem, look for something along the lines of transceiver stats, it’ll say something like upstream and downstream, upstream= upload speeds, downstream=download speeds. your downstream should be much faster then your upstream since it’s dsl.
This is how mine looks:
Transceiver Information
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) Down Stream Path/860
Up Stream Path/153
Hope this helps a little, if the address dosn’t work try a different combination at the end. ex. 192.168.1.x where x equals another number

The connection speed your computer reports is the port speed – it is not showing the speed which you connect to the internet.
Your dialup modem may pop up and say you’re connected at 50.2k, but two seconds later it may adjust for line noise or attenuation when you actually start using it. It may also speedshift up to a faster connection… but it’ll never tell you that.
Your real life speed should be measured with a internet speed test website, like:
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
On dialup, this might take a minute or two – but you’ll get an accurate reading.
