I cleaned off my old Dell desktop that has a dialup modem. Loaded Windows XP Pro – dialup connection dropped to 26.8. Had the geeks come out to assess and was told that my 486 processor was unable to keep up with the OS.
I purchased a new Dell laptop in January thinking that everything would be configured correctly and my dialup would increase a bit.
NOT!!! What is causing this issue?
Also, I heard that Vista will not work with dial up. Is this accurate? I have the upgrade but have not installed it.
Dude, get with the times…Broadband access is what you want…Verizon DSL is only like 5 bucks more than dialup and a lot faster.

The phone company may also be degrading your connection. Since they are all pushing their DSL programs. They really do not have a big motive to keep the regular phone lines clean enough to get a good connection. As any interference on the phone line will degrade a phone modem’s connection and slow down the transfer rate.
Also the farther you are from a node the slower your dialup will be. Most folks only get 48k at best with a good connection.
If cost is your problem. Your best bet would be to get a low transfer rate Cable or DSL connection. Both have multiple transfer rates usually starting around $20 a month.
If you are too far out to have access to either of these. Then that may be your problem. You are too far from the main lines to get a good connection.
