Yahoo Messenger is dependent upon Internet Explorer. So even if you do not use it you still need to have it. I do not recommend updating to IE7 though, too many people are reporting bugs with it. IE6 is fine.
Go to Messenger Menu at top of YM then Preferences. On the Connections part try each of these in turn to see if they fix your problem. You may find that
No Network Detection works the best for you.
I am not sure yet if this is just an issue I am having or a glitch in yahoo messenger but my YM crashes a lot if I am using any skin but the Classic Skin. Messenger Menu-Change Skin.
The next thing I would try is to clear out my Yahoo Messenger Cache folder. My computer-C:drive-Program Files-Yahoo-Messenger-Cache. You can safely delete the contents of this folder. You will lose the security seal if you made one but it only takes a few seconds to load it back on. And your contact search bar drop down list, which most people want to get rid of anyways (different from your friend’s list) located at the top of YM. But first Exit yahoo messenger completely by right clicking icon by clock and choose exit.
Good luck, I hope this has helped.
