well i want to get the internet on my second hand computer that i recently bought ……. i have an isp but the modem in the pc doesnt work (it says no dial tone) so i bought a external 1 for the dialup connection then the light which indicates the telephone line is in aint on…..why??? i checked all the cables and then i connected a phone and that worked?? ….. i cant work it out… plz help
Try putting a filter on the line because the pc cant hear the tones it needs to run the modem.

I bet you’re using the same drop lead from the new modem to the phone wall socket as you used for the old modem?
Sounds to me like your modem to wall socket lead is either broken or the wrong one. There are at least two sorts – I’ve seen middle-to-outside pair swapped ones and straight-through ones… by middle to outside I mean:
1-2
2-1
3-4
4-3
first one being the numbering on the 4 contacts in the RJ11 lead… second one being the other end of the RJ11.
Try a different modem lead.

Firstly check that the drivers for the modem are installed. Do this be right clicking My Computer, Manage and then Device Manager. Check that under modems there are no yellow marks. If there is a problem here you need to install the drivers for the modem. If this is ok, double click the modem driver icon and click on the Diagnostics tab and select Query Modem. Check that it says Success or OK. If this is fine then the drivers are good and the connection to the pc is good, and the pc can “see” the modem and “talk” to it. Now under your internet connection’s properties make sure that that modem you installed is selected to be used for that connection, because I think this might be the problem. You can do this be going to Network Connections in Control Panel and right clicking that internet connection and properties. Also on the phone port in the modem plug in a telephone to test the line! Check it there. Hope this helps!
