Back in the mid to late ’90s, I hooked up entire networks to the Internet using one dial-up modem computer. In one case, a school used that dial-up connection for 5 years with no maintenance, finally calling me for help when the hard drive was in such bad shape that even its industrial-grade operating system couldn’t keep it going.
That operating system was Linux. Back then, the concept and implementation of IP forwarding was quite rare. Today it is not, and even that Monopoly OS from Redmond (Windows XP, but I think just the Pro version) can do it.
So the answers that tell you it can’t be done are quite wrong. I’d advise you to do it with Linux – unless you have XP Pro already running, in which case it’s a click-and-do-it wizard operation even for Windows.
You don’t need more than a serial cable for the second computer, and it can also be done through USB or parallel port.
Good luck.
If you happen to need Linux or want to test it out, try http://pclinuxos.com.
If you can’t find the IP forwarding wizard or need help on connecting the computers, search on Google for ‘IP forwarding’ in the OS of your choice. Nothing to it – these days, that is!
