I have purchased a Dell OptiPlex GX50 for my Grandmother. She wants to have a dial up Internet connection. What 56K modem would you recommend?

Why would you want a dial up internet connection, you can get DSL, it is much faster and really not that much more in cost.

Those are commodity items, now — which means they all have the same features, and pretty much the same hardware.
When it comes to commodity items, the only factor to consider is cost. You can get them for as cheap as $7 online.

check out http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825104001 – USR usually has some really good modems at good prices. Back when dial-up was the it, US Robotics was too and I’m sure they are still putting out good stuff. Although if DSL is available in her area, you may reccomend that to her instead. It is usually just as cheap and there are usually different speeds. If she was to get the lowest speed, it will still be at least twice as fast as the 56K and more reliable. That is also if it is available in the area.
