What can I learn about getting the highest dial-up modem speed?

What can I learn about getting highest connect speed with a dialup modem? I now have a pctel v90 56kps, but my actual speeds are from 26- 36kps.Also I’m looking into the possibility of finding a driver that will make it compatible with suse linux 9.2, Any Help?

    Its just really hard to get good dial up speeds theres too many different factors, but make sure that you have a good connection.(ie the telephone wires are really good,the termanals and cables)

    Your best actual speed will probably never go above 48kbps here is a link to some troubleshooting phone line noise
