What is the best cost effective high speed internet service for someone who can’t get DSL or cable on a farm.

I live out in the boondocks and unfortunately cable and DSL internet aren’t available. I have heard about Satellite Internet but have been told it can be very expensive. I’m on somewhat of a tight budget and am looking to switch from my slow dialup which runs at a speed of 28.8 kbps to a faster service so I can enjoy all the net has to offer better.
Is there a good cost effective high speed internet service provider out there or something that you think would work for me?
Hope someone can help. Thank you.

  1. Satellite is very expensive on its own (in my opinion) and difficult to maintain. The only two suggestions I have are to check with some of the satellite TV providers (Dish Network, etc.) to see if they have a bundled package that might provide internet access along with the basic TV service. Or, contact your current dial up provider to see if they have what’s called an accelerator. For a nominal fee (about $5. a month extra in most places) they can boost your dial up and it’s specifically tuned for your service.

Other places like Google offer their own accelerators but you have no support if something goes wrong.

And one other suggestion for increasing computer speed is to get as much RAM as your computer will support (and you can afford.) It won’t increase upload or download speeds (which are controlled by your ISP) but it will speed up how fast you can revisit sites or retrieve info in your history and/or temp files.
