Other than buying used, you can get a low end Desktop from dell for $300 or so. But does she prefer to sit on a couch and check her mail? Might want to ask her as well what she would like.

There are two decent options I can think of. The first is Microsoft Internet TV. It literally connects to your television, and allows you to use a wireless keyboard to type e-mails, and surf the web. Not sure if it works with any provider or just MSTV.
Also, Earthlink used to have their Mailstation devices. Unfortunately, they’re e-mail only (no web surfing), but they’re extremely cheap (around $99). They look like a small typewriter with an LCD screen. My grandmother’s been using one for about 2 years now, and loves it.
