If I want to keep downloading someting ex.songs movies etc. will putting it on stnadby to conserve energy affect the downloads or my internet connection (not dialup or dsl)

No. It will not continue downloading in StandBy.

It is in a hibernation or standby mode where everything shuts down only to wake up when you touch the mouse , keyboard or power switch
Think of the computer as being in a sleep mode

When you awaken from hibernation, everything is back where you last had it ( Notice that Ram is working but the Harddrive is not so it really is not saving the information or processing your down load)
