Global National News January 31, 2011 Usage Based Billing UBB

Global News segment about the upcoming overage fees being forced on to wholesale DSL companies. The CRTC is not protecting consumers from price gouging even when they use alternate DSL providers like Teksavvy. The real cost per GB of data has been determined to be around .01 but Bell wants to charge anywhere from .00 to .50 per GB, a criminal markup. ISPs are charging Canadians more to use infrastructure that we subsidized through our tax dollars. It’s no secret that Bell and Rogers are not only threatened by the small ISP’s, but the arrival of Netflix in Canada will draw many customers away from their pay per view offerings. Don’t stand by and let big media take away your options. What can you do? www.antiubb.com openmedia.ca

These series of campaigns for Virgin Media didn’t quite hit the mark and we really need to go back to the fundementals of what kind of dialogue Broadband and Pay TV companies should be having with consumers these days. Virgin has given its brand to the merged NTL & Telewest without giving much consideration what the Virgin brand should mean in this sector. We should also consider the relevancy of the product offer. Virgin’s recent campaigns are trying desperately to show themselves as better than Sky and other service providers, but it seems as if these campaigns are failing to address real consumer demand or needs. Yes Virgin are technically able to offer cable modem speeds well above that of most DSL providers, but the question is, what can the consumer do with it? This TV ad and all the print campaigns really fail to address this issue. Surely a mass-market TV campaign should be presenting Virgin’s Broadband offer in a totally different way? .01 but Bell wants to charge anywhere from .00 to .50 per, an outrageous markup. It would also create a very awkward business situation where customers would be paying 2 companies for 1 service, with Bell taking more in just overage fees than the primary company gets for the entire internet service package (access, tech support, billing, etc). Virtually unheard of in other business sectors.
