slow dialup internet connection?

I have dialup internet at home. It starts off fine, but then after 5 minutes, it slows right down until it eventually freezes up. What is strange is that if I download something in the background (spybot or AVG updates), the interent connection will work fine until the download is completed. Then it will slow down until it freezes. The longest I can surf the internet at one time is about 10 minutes. I have Windows XP with a newer modem. I have tried both IE and FireFox and it happens on both. Any Suggestions???

When it slows down until it freezes, I cannot close out of anything. Everything on the PC is locked up. I have to hold in the power button to re-start the computer.

When i connect to dialup connection of a 52 kbps speed and download something the ” download speed ” is 4kbps?

the computer connects to a speed of 52 kbps( wriiten in system tray ) ,then why when i download some thing the speed is onlyyyyyyyyy 4 or 5 kbps…………………???
ok listen….i explain….when i download about 1 megabyte of something it takes about 2 minutes
that is MY DOWNLOAD SPEED THAT IS WRITTEN IN THE DOWNLOAD BOX (when i download something) is 4 kilobytes and around. 1 kilobyte =1024 bytes = 8192 bits ok??????
ok listen….i explain….when i download about 1 megabyte of something it takes about 2 minutes
that is MY DOWNLOAD SPEED THAT IS WRITTEN IN THE DOWNLOAD BOX (when i download something) is 4 kilobytes and around. 1 kilobyte =1024 bytes = 8192 bits ok??????
one more thing the DOWNLOAD SPEED IS SOME TIMES 16kilobytes per sec but it remains for only 2or three seconds ????why??

Modem for Dial-Up in new HP Dv2000t for internet access?

Well I just ordered my new laptop online but I realized that we have dial-up (can’t get anything else) and so I need something with a modem!? Do most laptops come with a like 56K modem even if it doesn’t say so, or because no one has dialup anymore did they just stop adding that? If so, is there some sort of a modem I can add with a cable? HELP!

768 k DSL is How many times faster than 56k Dialup?

768 kbps dsl is how many times faster than 56k dialup (or 45k what I usually connect at on dialup)? Is it like 12 times faster or something like that?

I’ve been using DU Meter, but it works for mainly dialup. Looking for something that is freeware and will monitor upload and download over a certain amount of time. Then keeps track over a period of a day, week, and month.
