Liberty Media and CEO John Malone are also involved with Sprint’s cell phone service.
I have a friend who lives in a small city of ~30,000 people. The entire city is controlled by a greedy phone company. If you want landline phone service or local internet you must use them. The prices are not competitive. He is paying $20/month for a dial up internet account + $30/month for the stupid phone line to use said account. The phone company will offer him “high speed” DSL internet for ~$80/month (750kup/750kdown) which is not even that fast. There is no option to use Sprint, MCI, AT&T, etc…just his crappy greedy phone company. Is this legal? It’s a total monopoly.

My family has had the Sprint MiFi mobile broadband card for a few months now, and it’s really terrible. We keep going over the data plan when only doing little things, and I want to get a new ISP. Is there really an unlimited mobile broadband out there? I was looking at Virgin Mobile, and they say they have an unlimited pay-as-you-go data plan, but I’m not sure if there’s a hidden catch.
Also, the reason I need mobile broadband is that cable/dsl isn’t available in my area, and I’ve looked at some satellite providers and haven’t found one in my area either. It’s either dial-up or mobile broadband. Please help!

I believe that this company did indeed install the phone wiring for the city…but for some reason I didn’t think that would make them exempt from maintaining a monopoly. Unfortunately there are no other companies for him to choose from. I’m just irritated to see this company ripping off so many people.

Bringing other companies in would be good. Unfortunately it would need to be a BIG company like AT&T, MCI, etc. because this phone company keeps buying out the other companies that startup.

I was going to use Sprint Broadband Direct (wireless), but they couldn’t get a signal in my area because of too many trees. 
My goal is to have a higher-speed connection than dial-up, and then I will use a router in the house, so more than one person can be on the web at the same time. I would also like to have something that does NOT interfere with incoming phone calls. I have a dish for my TV, so there is no option to use a cable TV company.
Any suggestions of what company has a good plan, without having to take out a loan to pay for it?
AT&T does not have service in our area for DSL.
I need something for the state of IL.
Well, I found out that Verizon and AT&T don’t have service for high-speed or DSL in my area.
I think we need to go with Comcast. We have a dish right now, but might switch back to cable to get the cheaper rate for cable and internet service.
