Call For Help – Chris Pirillo – How to Speed Up a Dial Up Connection – HQ

Learn how to use www.dslreports.com and NetStat Live to find out dialup and upload-download information. This clip also shows how a tool EasyMTU allows tweaking of Maximum Transmission Units to speed up dialup connection.

Dial up – worst internet connection ever!

At home we only have a dial up connection. It drives me crazy! There’s broadband at school though, thank god! I wouldn’t mind uploading a video of me loading a youtube video or any other website or web pages, but if you do request a video, prepare to be bored! This took ages to upload (more than 35 minutes) so I hope you like it!

I’m looking for an internet monitoring program that works for dsl…for uploads and downloads and time online.

I’ve been using DU Meter, but it works for mainly dialup. Looking for something that is freeware and will monitor upload and download over a certain amount of time. Then keeps track over a period of a day, week, and month.

Dialup faster than satellite?

I just signed up for satellite internet and it is slower than my old dialup access. Sure, download speed is faster…for downloading files. But, upload speed on the satellite is horrible! Regular web surfing is much slower than dialup.

I did a speed test on both connections. Look at the results and tell me if that is typical for dialup upload speeds to be so much faster. Should I complain to the satellite company after seeing the results below?

Satellite Average Speeds:
Upload: 70-100
Download: 1200-1500

Dialup Average Speeds:
Upload: 180-190
Download: 40-50

Why aren’t upload and download speeds on my satellite connection that same?

On my satellite connection my upload speed is about 50k/sec vs. a download speed of 500k/sec. I measured my dialup speed and I get an upload speed of 300k/sec and a download speed between 30-46k/sec.
If you average the upload and download speeds of each of the two methods, the “broadband” is only about 1 ½ times as fast as dialup, not the 10x faster than dialup advertised.
